Chinese national killed during robbery in Berbice

A Chinese national was on Monday morning killed during a robbery at his home and place of business at Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). Dead is 61-year-old Chen Yongping, while his 32-year-old son Chen Dongrong was injured. The man and his son were attacked with knives by two armed bandits just after arriving at their business place. According to the police, the men had gone to the Port Mourant Market and returned at about 05:00h in a bus, and as they drove into their yard, they were pounced upon by the bandits. They were robbed of cash and their cellphones. They subsequently made good their escape on foot. The police were alerted, and both men were taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where the father succumbed to stab wounds while receiving treatment. Guyana Times understands that the men had gone to the market to purchase cassava, and as they were unloading it, they were attacked.

Both men were robbed of their cell phones during the attack; one valued at $322,000 and the other at $342,000.00. Additionally, $150,000 was taken from the son and an unknown amount of money from his father. This publication understands that neither of the two young bandits was masked and both carried knives. Meanwhile, Dongrong has since been discharged from the New Amsterdam Hospital. At least four persons were taken into custody as police continue to probe.
