Home News “Chucky” killed by allegedly speeding minibus at Non Pareil
A minibus driver was taken into Police custody following an accident along the Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road on Thursday which resulted in the death of a pedal cyclist.
The deceased was not properly identified but he was known by villagers as “Chucky”.
The driver of the minibus, a 29-year-old of No 28 Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB), was reportedly driving minibus BXX 4563 at the time of the accident.
Based on information received, the minibus was proceeding along the roadway at an alleged fast rate of speed when the driver claimed that he observed the now dead man ahead of him.
However, he told Police that as he was about to pass the bicycle, “Chucky” made a sudden turn and ended up in the path of the minibus, thus resulting in a collision.
As a result, the cyclist fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries about his body.
He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting identification and post-mortem. The driver, who passed a breathalyser test, remains in custody assisting with investigations.
