CICC overcome Independence ‘A’ Cricket Club for place in final
WDCA 50 Overs’ Competition…
The Cornelia Ida Cricket Club (CICC) overcame their Independence ‘A’ counterparts in a semi-final match of the West Demerara Cricket Association’s 50 overs’ competition played on Sunday last at the Joe Vieira Park.
They will now come up against the McGill Superstars in the final, to be played this Sunday.
Winning the toss and opting to bat, the Independence ‘A’ side had their work cut out for them. There was no room for error, and things did not go as planned, as they lost crucial wickets in the powerplay overs, and that forced their batsmen to go on the defensive.
The Independence ‘A’ team were eventually dismissed for 169 runs made in 40.1 overs. Mahindra Dhanpaul top-scored with 27, while Reaz Esau contributed 25. No other batsman made any significant contribution.
Cornelia Ida’s Arshad Azim led the bowling attack with 3 wickets for 27 runs culled in 10 overs, and Naveed Ali kept things tight with 2 for 8 off his 4 overs.
Needing 170 for victory off 300 balls, it was a proverbial walk in the park for the CICC side. Their batsmen were able to play themselves in, and they virtually had eternity to make the runs. Despite a couple of wickets falling, they rallied on towards a resounding victory, reaching
170-5 in 26.3 overs.
Arshad Azim top scored with 51 despite retiring hurt, while Naveed Ali was left unbeaten on 35 and Khellawan Tulcan made 21.
Strike bowlers for the Independence ‘A’ side were Seenauth Bissessar with 2 for 19 and Jagnarine Etwaroo with 2 for 66.
