Classy Campbell sets up huge win for Guyana ladies with ton
Shemaine Campbell stroked a match-winning hundred as Guyana romped to a 65-run win over Leewards in round one of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s Super50 Tournament.
After the T20 format ended on Monday, the ladies shifted gear to the 50-Over version, which bowled its first round on Wednesday at Sabina Park, Jamaica. Batting first, the Guyanese side racked up their highest total since the Women’s Championships commenced.
Player-of-the Match Campbell, who was the leading run-scorer in the T20 Blaze Championships, hit a classy 107 from 135 balls, with 11 fours and a maximum, propelling Guyana to 229-9 when their 50 overs expired. Mandy Mangru, promoted to open, scored 24; while Melanie Henry was the next best scorer, with 17.
Leewards had a decent bowling out, with Amanda Edwards being the pick of the lot with 3-42. Two wickets apiece went to Shawnisha Hector and Davanna Claxton, helped to cap off decent bowling outing.

Chasing a decent target against a star-studded Guyanese bowling attack, Leewards were knocked over for 164 in 45 overs, after spinner Sheneta Grimmond bagged an impressive 4-27; with Akaze Thompson, Subrena Munroe and the veteran Erva Giddings — leading wicket-taker in the T20s (8 wickets) — bagging two scalps each.
Jenisen Richards offered resistance as she ended on 41 not out, while Terez Parker (24) and Saneldo Willett (28) managed to make starts but failed to convert.
Meanwhile, hosts Jamaica romped to a 7-wicket win over Trinidad and Tobago, thanks to Captain Stafanie Taylor, who stroked an unbeaten 98.
Barbados, who wreaked havoc in the T20s, then secured a vital 47-run win over the Windward Islands, with Kycia Knight top-scoring with 60 despite another top innings from the seasoned opener Juliana Nero, who also hit 60 in vain. (Clifton Ross)
