Home Sports CMTC ready for February 16 horserace meet
ꟷ club seeks more sponsors
The Crawford Memorial Turf Club (CMTC) will be gearing up for its February 16 horserace meet – its first major event for 2020.
The meet will be held under the theme “President’s Cup” and will feature some of the most riveting races at the club’s Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice location.
The feature event of this meet is ‘The Crawford Stakes’, set to be run over 1400 metres for a winner’s purse of $500,000 and a trophy.
In a statement released by the club, CMTC President Marcel Crawford Jr said, “So far, we have about 25 horses confirmed; it is the expectation of the club that the meet will be dry as there will be no showers. Most importantly we are looking for new sponsors to come on board and we are optimistic that things will materialise. We must say thanks to our main sponsor Banks DIH, also to Senior Counsel Poonai from Georgetown and everyone else who has supported us over the years.”
Other events listed on the card are as follows: The J and Lower race over 1400 metres for a winner’s purse of $220,000 and a trophy; the race for 3-Year-Old horses over 1400 metres for a winner’s purse of $200,000 and a trophy; the L1 and Lower race over 1000 metres for a winner’s purse of $150,000 and a trophy; the L2 and Lower race over 1000 metres for a winner’s purse of $80,000 and the L3 Unclassified race over 1000 metres for a winner’s prize of $60,000.
Individual trophies and other incentives would be given to riders who perform exceptionally well.
He also said the races would be run under the rules of the legislative draft of his father, the late Attorney-at-Law Marcel Crawford, and all bookings must be done with a deposit of $5000.
If a race has fewer than five horses participating, the winner’s purse would be reduced, he said.
