Cocaine mule jailed, fined $3.8M

The Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD) woman caught attempting to smuggle some 2.5 kilograms of cocaine into Canada last December was on Monday jailed for three years for the offence.
Forty-two-year-old Andrea Paula Winfield, of Lot 12 Prince William Street, Plaisance, received the sentence from Magistrate Annette Singh along with a hefty fine of $3.8 million.
It is alleged that she attempted to smuggle the cocaine through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara on December 16, 2017.
Reports are Winfield was an outgoing passenger at the CJIA when she was stopped and questioned by Customs officers about where she was staying in Canada.
She failed to give an answer to the officers who became suspicious and checks were made to her luggage. During the search, the cocaine was unearthed. She was arrested and charged for the offence on December 20, 2017.
Winfield was represented by Attorney-at-Law Max McKay.
