A woman who appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in tears at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday was remanded to prison, charged with trafficking cocaine.
Andrea Polla Winifred of Lot 12 Prince Williams Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on December 16, 2016, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), she had in her possession 2.548kg of cocaine.
The prosecution contended that on the day in question, the defendant was an outgoing passenger to Canada, when she failed to give a proper address to the airport officers.
As such, an alarm was raised and the woman’s hand luggage was inspected. A false wall was found in her handbag with the cocaine hidden inside.
She was taken into Police custody, questioned and charged with the offence.
The prosecution objected to bail, pointing out that there were no special reasons why this should be granted.
Winifred was remanded to prison until January 10, 2017.
