Commonwealth Games 2022: Abrams, Allicock to carry Guyana’s flag
…Athletes, coaches pumped up ahead of opener
With the exception of Badminton and Athletics, members of Guyana’s Commonwealth Games contingent are settling into the athletes’ villages in Birmingham, England ahead of Thursday’s opening ceremony.
Guyana’s flag-bearers have been assigned, as the athletes jumped into final training. 400M specialist Aliyah Abrams and pugilist Keevin Allicock will be responsible for carrying the Golden Arrowhead at the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Thursday, July 28th. The Opening Ceremony will commence at 2pm local time.
Meanwhile, in the athletes’ villages, members of Guyana’s contingent, who arrived between Monday and Tuesday, are putting the icing on the cake in terms of preparation.
The Table Tennis team witnessed the arrival of Chelsea Edghill on Tuesday, and got down to business. Coach Idi Lewis, although criticising aspects of their preparation, has indicated that his team would be hunting medals, come Friday.
“As I said before, Table Tennis does really well at these games in the past, and I think we have a very strong team coming into these Commonwealth Games. So, I look forward to repeat performance,” the Table Tennis Coach said during an invited comment.
Lewis further stated, “Of course, I’d like my team to be a lot better prepared, so we could really come here to hunt. I want to be in a position where we’re here hunting medals. I know my guys always do pretty well at the Games, so I’m looking forward to a repeat of that.”
Swimming Coach Sean Baksh, also super confident, has noted that he expects personal best times from his 4-member team.
“So far, they’ve trained well and they’ve put in a lot of work, and I expect them to do – every one of the athletes here – to do a personal best, and we’ll see how far they can get through the rounds. They should do pretty good,” Coach Baksh opined. “I expect that they would push a little bit more and get their time to come down,” the Coach reiterated about the effect the international games will have on his team.
Guyana is being represented at the Commonwealth Games by 32 athletes, spanning 7 sport disciplines. The Games will run from July 28th to August 8th.
