Confident cycling team off to Pan-Am Road Race championships

A strong team of Guyanese cyclists have departed local shores for Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic where they will be taking part in the Pan American Road Race Cycling Championships at the Mirador Sur Park over the course of the next few days.
The team which departed Guyana on Tuesday included We Stand United’s Andrew Hicks, Team Coco’s duo, Jamual John and Junior Niles, Team Evolution’s Paul Denobrega as well as Guyana Cycling Federation President, Horace Burrowes. Assistant Guyana Cycling Federation Racing Secretary, Joseph Britton and Burrowes are the officials on the trip.

Also in the team is Coco’s Hamzah Eastman who ripped apart the competition in the previous local road race but has been racing in Anguilla since and is expected to join the team in Santo Domingo.
The Road Racing championships are expected to begin today and run until May 7 with Hicks taking part in the under 23 which will be a 140Km race on May 6. John, DeNobrega, Eastman and Niles will be aiming to lift the Golden Arrow Head proudly in the Elite segment of the race on May 7 which will be a 170Km battle.
Speaking to Guyana Times Sport prior to their departure, both Hicks and Denobrega indicated their excitement in attending the championships and are confident of placing highly after their local performances.
Also the Coco’s boys are all in optimum condition having been at the top of their game in recent times and are tipped to be the front runners in the event.
Jorge Blas Diaz, president of the Dominican Federation of Cycling announced that more than 200 riders will represent the 25 countries that have already confirmed their participation in the 32nd edition of the Pan-American Cycling Championship.
Blas Diaz said that some of the nations that will be present at the big Pan-American cycling event will be Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador, Canada, Nicaragua, Barbados, Saint Vincent, Saint Lucia, Bermuda, Martínica, Virgin Islands, Guadalupe, Guyana, Cuba among others.
The event will give berths for the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia.
