The dry weather game “cricket”, for now, is over in Guyana. I join with every Guyanese in expressing congratulations to the management of GAW and the Amazon Warriors for the most memorable season of CPL. Kudos! You have all made us proud. The games were entertaining and the crowd support was electrifying. The general conduct of the fans was excellent, the work of the traffic officers before and after the games was commendable. However, there are two things that were evident and need to be corrected for future activities.
First, after the games, or any other event, the management of the stadium should ensure that all the bottles, boxes, garbage and other forms of disposables are removed from the compound.
In plain sight, garbage was evident at the entrance of the gate leading into the VVIP section. Heaps of bottles, boxes, bags, etc were seen throughout the duration of the games. I find it hard to believe that the officials in charge of the stadium overlooked that important entrance. That section is where the most important people of this country and even further traverse. Among the noticeable persons at the games were Government Ministers, the Opposition Leader, presidential nominee of the PPP/C, the American Ambassador, high officials of ExxonMobil, senior public servants, the business elites and bankers. It was indeed a disgraceful sight and demeaning of our standards.
The other issue is for the Commissioner of Police. After every event at the stadium, numerous persons get robbed, assaulted and caressed by knife-wielding bandits. I am surprised that this activity has been going on for so long and there is no active police presence between Princess Hotel and the Harbour Bridge to protect the supporters of the event despite several reports and complaints to the Guyana Police Force.
On many early mornings after a social event at the Providence Stadium, myself and other worshipers from the neighbouring Masjids have had to assist young girls who are left stranded without passage, assist them with telephone calls or transport them to their destinations.
It is my hope that the relevant authorities can look into these matters and take corrective measures in good faith.
