Construction worker charged for murdering BV labourer

Twenty-nine-year-old Devon Mohamed, also called ‘Chike Baba’, a construction worker of Sideline Dam Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD), has been remanded to prison on Thursday for the murder of 45-year-old Troy Hicks.
Mohammed appeared before Sparendaam Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool and was not required to plead to the indictable charge. He has been remanded to prison until July 14.
Mohammed is being accused of killing Hicks, of Beterverwagting, ECD, on May 28 at Hendricks Street, Triumph, ECD. The Police have said that Hicks and the suspect had had a misunderstanding earlier in the day. Reports are that Hicks was walking on Hendricks Street when the suspect attacked him with a cutlass and chopped him about his head and shoulders.
Mohammed, who was armed with a dog chain and cutlass, chopped the victim to his forehead, and the now-deceased man ran into a corner shop after a group of men started to pelt him with bricks. He also pelted bottles at the men, and managed to run north on Republic Drive, Beterverwagting, but the men ran after him. He later collapsed. Police have said that Hicks was picked up alive and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Several persons were questioned and statements were taken.
