Construction worker charged for raping teen

A 26-year-old construction worker was on Friday released on $250,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after he was hauled before the court for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl.
Calvin Mann, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plea to the indictable charge, which was read in camera at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday.
The charge alleged that between August 1 and August 31, 2018, Mann committed the dreadful act on the child without her consent.
However, Police Prosecutor Simone Payne objected to bail being granted to the accused while informing the court that the victim and the defendant are known to each other.
The Chief Magistrate overruled the prosecution’s submission and granted the labourer his pre-trial liberty. Mann was represented by Attorney Stanley Moore.
The case will continue on October 23.
