A construction worker is the first road fatality of 2026 after he reportedly lost control of the motorcycle he was driving on Thursday along Coldingen Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD). The deceased man has been identified as 21-year-old Brandon Thomas of Melanie ECD.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on January 1, at about 07:00h, the motorcycle bearing registration number CN 8252, driven by the now deceased man, was speeding along the roadway when he reportedly lost control and fell, sustaining bodily injuries.
He was picked up and taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage as investigations continue.
It was reported that up to November 18, 2025, 49 motorcyclists had died in crashes – along with 25 pedestrians, 15 drivers, 8 passengers, 7 pedal cyclists and 10 pillion riders.
In light of this, Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh had stated that speeding continues to be the single most lethal factor on Guyana’s roads, with about 85 per cent of all fatal crashes in 2025 linked directly to speeding.
