Contractor charged with obtaining by false pretence on $200,000 bail

A 43-year-old contractor of Ogle Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD), has been charged in connection with an alleged case of obtaining by false pretence.

Vidyanand Datt was arrested on October 16, 2025, and later charged on January 9, 2026, for the offence of obtaining by false pretence, contrary to Section 194 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 08:01. Police allege that the offence was committed sometime in August 2025 at Montrose, ECD and involved a 57-year-old man, Seodat Mootee of Montrose North. Datt appeared on Friday last at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs. The charge was read to him and he pleaded guilty with an explanation. Based on the explanation offered, the court entered a plea of not guilty. Magistrate Gibbs subsequently granted Datt bail in the sum of $200,000. The matter was adjourned to March 4.
