Convicted murderer gets 22-year jail sentence

Twenty-four-year-old Morris Fredericks who earlier this month admitted to killing former Kara Kara, Linden resident Allister Creighton at Kokerite Landing, Barima River was on Wednesday sentenced to 22 years by High Court Judge Simone Morris-Ramlall.

Morris Fredericks, who was a teenager at the time he became a murderer, will spend the next 22 years behind bars

Fredericks, a logger, admitted to killing 33-year-old Creighton on November 29, 2011 by chopping him in the neck. According to reports back then, Fredericks was tied up after the incident and beaten about the body before he was handed over to Police.
At Wednesday’s sentencing, the young man begged the court for mercy, offering apologies for what he had done which contrasted with the prosecution’s call for the maximum sentence to be imposed. After his brief pleas were over, Justice Ramlall announced that she started the sentence at 40 years, but subtracted 13 years for his guilty plea and an additional five years for time served awaiting trial. The accused was represented by Attorney Maxwell McKay. State Prosecutors Seeta Bisundial and Narissa Leander presented the case for the State.
