Cop among 11 charged with DUI, refusing to consent to breathalyser test

A police constable was among 11 persons who were charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (DUI) and refusing to consent to breathalyser tests in Region One (Barima-Waini). Daren Cozier, Marc Marcus, Ronaldo Williams, Adrian Alberts, Kennard Smith, Damian Williams, William Duke, Joshua Thomas, Devon Chacon, and Leon Mendonca appeared at the Mabaruma and Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Courts, where they pleaded guilty and were fined.
On Monday, April 13, 2026, Daren Cozier of Kamwatta Village; Marc Marcus of Mabaruma Settlement; Ronaldo Williams of Barbina Village; and Adrian Alberts of Sugar Hill, Mabaruma were each fined $200,000.
Kennard Smith of Khan Hill, Mabaruma and Damian Williams of Wauna Village appeared at the same court on Tuesday, April 14, and were each slapped with a $200,000 fine. In addition, William Duke of Kumaka Waterfront and Joshua Thomas of Thomas Hill, Mabaruma appeared in court on Wednesday, April 15, and were also fined $200,000. Also on Wednesday, April 15, Devon Chacon of Train Line, Port Kaituma and Leon Mendonca of Oronoque, Port Kaituma appeared at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court and were each fined $100,000.

Meanwhile, Orson Speede was also charged with refusal to consent to a breathalyser test. He pleaded guilty at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court and was fined $30,000. These charges form part of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) ongoing traffic enforcement efforts in Regional Division 1, aimed at reducing impaired driving and promoting safer roadways across the region.
