Cop in hit-and-run accident surrenders

In light of a hit-and-run accident on Saturday evening along the Better Hope Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), which led to the death of a fisherman, a Police Constable attached to the Brickdam Police Station surrendered to authorities.
Police stated that following the accident, Ashton Barker of Norton Street Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, reported that the vehicle that was involved in the accident belonged to him.
Soon after, the Police Constable, Joel Simon, presented himself at the Sparendaam Police Station in the company of his attorney claiming that he was the driver of motor vehicle GPP 8699 at the time of the fatal accident. As such, he was placed under close arrest as Police continue their investigations.
Navindra Ramnarine of Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was killed while crossing the Better Hope, ECD Public Road on Saturday evening. The accident occurred at about 20:00h.
It was reported that Ramnarine was struck by what appeared to be a Tundra pick-up vehicle while it was overtaking another vehicle.
As a result of the collision, the now dead man was dragged approximately 100 feet from the initial point of impact. He was then run over by the vehicle which later sped off the scene. At the time of the man’s demise, he was reportedly visiting relatives in Better Hope.
He reportedly died on the spot. Ramnarine leaves to mourn his daughter who lives in Suriname and stepchildren.
