A Police officer was killed on Saturday night after he lost control of his motor vehicle and crashed into a shop on the Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD) public road.
Dead is 34-year-old Kwame Kellman, a Police Sergeant of Lot 40 Vigilance, ECD. He was attached to the Grove Police Station.
The accident occurred at about 23:55h on Saturday night, Police said in a report.
Reports are that the Sergeant was driving motor car PYY 3730 east on the northern drive lane of the northern carriageway when he subsequently lost control of his motor car and collided with a shop which is situated on the northern parapet of Lusignan public road.
The impact of the collision caused him to receive injuries about his body.
Following the accident, public-spirited citizens went to his rescue and took him out of the motor car but by then he had succumbed to his injuries.
He was later pronounced dead by Doctor Sampson of the Georgetown Public Hospital at the scene of the accident.
His body was then transported to Jerrick’s Funeral Home where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, on Sunday the Commissioner of Police (ag), Nigel Hoppie, extended condolences to the family, relatives, and colleagues of the late policeman.
He reiterated Traffic Chief Ramesh Ashram’s plea for all road users to exercise the five Cs (care, caution, consideration, common sense and courtesy) of road use at all times.
For the period January 1 to date for 2022, there were 20 fatal accidents with 26 deaths compared to 24 fatal accidents with twenty-five (25) deaths for 2021, where we are currently experiencing a 17 per cent decrease. (G9)
