A 36-year-old detective attached to the Fort Wellington Police Station has been taken into custody after he struck down and killed a pedestrian.
Police on Monday said the detective also refused to take a breathalyser test after the accident.
Dead is Quacy David, 36, of Number 30 Village, West Coast Berbice.
The accident occurred at around 15:41h on Sunday at the Number 28 Village Public Road.
Reports are that the motor car driven by the 36-year-old detective was proceeding along the road at a speed of about 75kmph. The driver alleged that the pedestrian suddenly walked out from an access road and into the path of his vehicle.
On seeing this, he claimed that he applied brakes to avoid a collision but despite his efforts the car collided with the pedestrian.
As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell onto the roadway and received injuries to his body. He was picked up in an unconscious condition by Police and escorted to Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was treated and later transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he died.
