A Police Corporal was on Friday charged with accepting a bribe of $400,000 from a woman to forgo the prosecution of a man who was arrested for an illegal firearm.
Corporal Omale Damon is facing three counts of corrupt transactions. He has pleaded not guilty. He was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan who remanded him to prison until August 21.
The court heard that on March 22, last, Corporal Damon collected $200,000 from a woman for the release of the man who was arrested by his colleagues for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Shortly after receiving the money, Corporal Damon received another $200,000 from the woman after telling her that the other Police ranks involved in the investigations wanted more money.
The woman then asked Corporal Damon to hand over the vehicle that was seized from the person following his arrest. However, the Police rank again requested $200,000 from her.
After informing the Corporal that she had no more money, the woman reached out to the spouse of the individual who was arrested. She in turn reported the matter to the Police Station.
As a result, a sting operation was carried out during which Corporal Damon was caught red-handed accepting $80,000 from the man’s girlfriend. The said money was recovered in his possession. (G1)
