Cop shot to head by cousin during row at Linden bar
A 32-year-old Police Sergeant is now hospitalised after he was allegedly shot by his cousin during an argument at a Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) bar.
Injured is Jermain Semple, who is stationed at the Tactical Services Unit.
Reports are that the cop and his 27-year-old building contractor cousin of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, were at the Crown and Anchor Grill and Bar in Linden on Sunday when an argument ensued.
According to investigations, at about 21:00h, Semple, along with his brother Dervon Semple and the suspect, were at the Crown and Anchor Grill and Bar when a fight emerged between the cop and his brother.
During the altercation, the cousin went to make peace and a fight then ensued between the victim and his cousin.
Police in a release said that as a result, the cousin took out his licensed handgun, a .32 pistol, at about 21:30h and discharged two rounds in the victim’s direction.
One struck the victim in his head, causing him to receive severe injuries. He was then rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was treated but was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation due to the seriousness of his injury.
Police in a statement said that the cousin was arrested, and the firearm was retrieved, which contained four live rounds in the magazine and one live round in the chamber.
The suspect received injuries to his left elbow and right ear during the fight and was escorted to the hospital for medical attention. He was subsequently discharged and is currently in Police custody assisting with the investigation.
The scene was canvassed, and two .32 empty spent shells were found. Investigations are ongoing.
