A Police subordinate officer is now hospitalised after he reportedly shot himself while attempting to hide an unlicensed firearm in his pants waist on Monday.
The incident occurred at Whitewater, Region One (Barima-Waini). The officer, whose identity was not released, was admitted a patient at the Mabaruma Hospital.
Reports are the firearm – which had no serial number – along with five live rounds of ammunition and a spent shell, was retrieved by an Army Lieutenant at the location.
The officer and a constable were part of a joint Police-Army patrol in the area. A team of senior detectives attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is expected to travel up to the area to commence investigations.
