Cop slapped with causing death charge

A 29-year-old Special Constable was on Monday charged for causing death by dangerous driving and was hauled in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Michael Lewis appeared before Magistrate Rushell Liverpool and denied the charge when it was read to him.
The charged detailed that on May 24, 2020, at Chateau Margot Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), he drove motorcar PKK 9991 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of 61-year-old Zalima Subrattie called ‘Patsy’ of Pigeon Island Squatting Area, ECD.
Reports are that car was reportedly driving along the East Coast Highway and suddenly changed lanes to overtake another vehicle, but instead, it came into contact with the woman who was attempting to cross the road. It is alleged that upon seeing the woman, the driver attempted to swerve, but the right side of the vehicle collided with the now dead woman.
As a result, Subrattie fell onto the roadway, where she sustained severe head and bodily injuries. The woman reportedly died on the spot. Lewis was released on $200,000 bail. The case will continue on October 12. (G1)
