Corentyne boat builder injured during row with elderly man

A 63-year-old man was taken into custody after he reportedly injured a boat builder at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, on Saturday evening during an argument over animals.
The injured man has been identified as 30-year-old Sunil Sopoi of Grant 1782, CWC.
Based on reports received, the victim and the suspect were engaged in a heated argument over the suspect hitting one of the victim’s goats.
Police stated that during the argument, Sopoi was armed with a piece of wood while the suspect was armed with two pieces of wood that had nails on them. The suspect reportedly dealt the victim several lashes to his left hand.
In addition, the suspect pulled out a cutlass from his pants waist and dealt the victim several lashes about his body and head.
As a result, public-spirited persons intervened. The injured man was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was treated and transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital. He remains a patient at the medical facility in a stable condition.
A report was subsequently made and the elderly man was contacted and arrested pending charges.
