Corentyne fisherman killed by hire car

A Corentyne man, who went on a fishing expedition on Monday to provide food for his family, was killed on his way back home after a car hit his bicycle. Dead is Ivan Preme, 60, of H&J Albion Front, Corentyne, Berbice.

The incident reportedly took place at Number One, Corentyne, at about 08:30h.

Champion of Guyana, Jeff Roberts, was stung by an insect and lost control of the vehicle bearing registration number HC 5720, which hit the cyclist.

Eyewitnesses say they heard a loud impact and rushed outside where Roberts was seen trying to assist the injured man.

Roberts then rushed the fisherman to the New Amsterdam Hospital in an unconscious state. The matter was reported to the Police.

The dead man’s daughter, Sheremattie Preme, explained that she received the news of the accident and immediately travelled to the hospital, however, about twenty minutes after leaving the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit, the doctors called to say that her father did not make it.

According to the 20-year-old woman, the doctors explained that several of the man’s ribs were broken and there was a lot of internal bleeding. She said there were several bandages on her father’s right arm and right leg.

Meanwhile, the dead man’s wife, Arai, explained that her husband was both a carpenter and a fisherman who never neglected his family. She noted that he left home at about 05:00h to get fish for the family and was expected to return at about 08:00h to prepare for his carpentry job.

The driver of the car is assisting Police with their investigations.
