Corentyne man freed of 2019 Christmas Day murder due to lack of evidence
A Corentyne, Berbice man was on Thursday freed of a charge of murdering another man on Christmas Day in 2019 after a Judge upheld a no-case submission made by his lawyer.
Rickford Thomas of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, had been on trial before Berbice High Court Judge Navindra Singh for the murder of 30-year-old Carlos Williams. Thomas’s trial began earlier this month.
When the prosecution closed its case, Thomas’s lawyer, Suriya Sabsook, submitted that there was no case against her client. The trial Judge agreed with counsel’s submissions which he upheld, discharged Thomas and informed him that he was free to go.
Williams, also known as “Tony”, 30, a driver of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, was attacked at a club located at Portuguese Quarters, Corentyne, on the day in question.
According to reports, Williams was leaving the club when he got involved in a heated exchange with Thomas, which led to a scuffle. It was then that Thomas allegedly stabbed Williams in his abdomen with a broken bottle before fleeing the scene.
The injured man was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where he succumbed while receiving treatment.
