Corentyne man nabbed in Suriname slapped with attempted murder charge
Sasenarine Sankar, called “Barber” or “Wire”, 47, of Number 69 Village, Corentyne, who was wanted for attempted murder committed against Sandy Persaud was on Friday charged and remanded to prison.
Sankar who was apprehended in Suriname over the weekend after being on the run for almost one year, appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
It is alleged that on April 5, 2023, with intent to murder, Sankar wounded Persaud.
The court was told that the woman was beaten and brutally chopped during a violent attack for which she was hospitalised.
Police Prosecutor Lance Corporal Shenell Matterson objected to bail on the grounds that after committing the act, the accused fled the jurisdiction.
However, Sankar told the court that over the past year, he has been living at his Number 69 Village, Corentyne, Berbice address. Nevertheless, bail was refused and the matter was transferred to Springlands Magistrate’s Court for May 23.
Following the hearing, Persaud spoke with the media.
“For one year, he hide even though I was going through a lot of pain. I feel glad that he get catch. I have been looking forward for justice and I am getting justice. I am still going through pain, and I still have to go back to surgery for my hand; I don’t know if I would be able to use it. I have to do surgery for $450,000,” she said as she removed the bandage from her arm to display the injury caused by the chop wound.
It had been reported that the 36-year-old Persaud, called “Baby”, of Number 69 Village, Corentyne, was found in the home with chop wounds to her shoulders, forearm, back, head, and feet; and she was also stabbed to the abdomen. The woman’s teenage daughter said her mother was a victim of constant physical abuse.
Persaud’s mother had also been lashed with a cutlass.
The barber had reportedly made several threats to Persaud’s life.
