The woman, who ingested a poisonous substance and gave some to her one-year-old baby last Saturday, has died.
Roshanie Ramlakhan, 19, of Number 58 Village Corentyne, succumbed on Friday at the Skeldon Hospital.
The mother of one was picked up in a semi-conscious state next to a bus shed at Number 61 Village and the child was standing next to her when she was found. She claimed that she had ingested a poisonous substance and had also given some to her baby to drink. While being hospitalised she told relatives that the baby did not drink the poison and that she had just rubbed in on the infant’s mouth.
However, the baby continues to be monitored at the Skeldon Hospital. Two days after being hospitalised, the infant displayed symptoms of poisoning.
The teen’s mother, Kaowala Thakurdyal, told Guyana Times that her daughter confirmed that she committed the act but has refused to give a reason.
