The Corentyne man Police arrested three days ago for the murder of his wife appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court Thursday and was remanded.
Winston Benjamin was taken from his holding cell at the Whim lock ups and placed before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga to answer the charge of murder.
It is alleged that on Monday, October 17, at Ulverston Village, Corentyne, he murdered Yansen Tamika Brusche. The 43-year-old Benjamin of Lot 40 Ulverston Village was not required to plea to the indictable charge.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Phillip Sherriff told the court that the file on the matter has already returned from the DPP and the Police have obtained all of the statements required. He said the Police are ready for the trial of the father of four.
Magistrate Artiga set December 19 to commence the Preliminary Inquiry and remanded the accused until then. Moments later the defendant was taken out of the courtroom where his relatives and those of the victim were waiting; many of those waiting were cousins to both the accused and the deceased.
Following the fatal stabbing of Brusche at a shop a few houses away from her Ulverston home, Benjamin went into hiding. Police launched a search and even used horses to assist in locating the suspect, who was discovered some 15 miles into the Backdam.
When he was found he still had the alleged murder weapon with him. Investigators were able to obtain a confession statement from Benjamin.
Brusche, 38, and Benjamin shared four children together; two of them wept as he was being taken away from the court.
His request to meet with his two eldest daughters was welcomed. Meanwhile, it is still not clear when Brusche will be laid to rest.
