Three Corentyne men were on Friday sentenced to a total of 209 months’ imprisonment on several armed robbery, possession of gun and ammunition charges.
Akeem Cummings, 19, of Springlands, Corriverton, was sentenced to 136 months after pleading guilty to four offences.
Akeem Blades, 18, of Dukestown, Corriverton, was sentenced to 111 months after pleading guilty to three offences and Neil Proffit, 26, of Number 76 Housing Scheme Corriverton, Berbice, was sentenced to a total of 90 months after pleading guilty to three offences.
The trio appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Court.
It was reported that on December 5, 2020, at Number 76 Corriverton, the trio robbed Abdoelajoem Bhoelan and his wife Bibi Bhoelan of US$500 and two cell phones valued $102,000.
On the day in question, the armed men reportedly stormed into the couple’s yard – one was armed with a black handgun, one with a cutlass and the third with a knife. The men also had rags partly covering their nose and mouth.
The bandits, with the cutlass and knife, dealt the couple several lashes about their bodies and took the US currency from a cupboard in the kitchen. The armed men then took the couple to the upper flat of the house where they were bound and blindfolded.
In addition, they also pleaded guilty to robbing Dr Edvardo Gutierrez Alvaeer, 49, a Cuban national attached to the Skeldon Hospital.
In that case, it was reported that the doctor was awakened by loud sounds emanating from the living room and as such, he got up to investigate.
However, as he opened the bedroom door, he was confronted by the two suspects, one of whom held the victim’s neck and relieved him of his gold chains valued at $510,000. They also escaped with two Smart television sets valued $75,000 and $150,000 cash.
Further, Cummings was slapped with a robbery with violence charge committed on Mahandranauth Ganga and given a six-month jail term. Profitt also pleaded guilty to possession of firearms and ammunition and was sentenced to forty-two months’ imprisonment.
