On Thursday, it was reported that the Subordinate Officer escaped from the Brickdam Police Station last weekend, where he was being kept under confinement. However, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum clarified on Thursday that the Corporal did not escaped but left after submitting a medical certificate for 14 days sick leave.

Blanhum related that the medical document was presented to him by the officer’s attorney and he (Blanhum) was expected to respond “appropriately.”

Marks, is said to be the brother of the tattoo artiste, who was charged and remanded to prison for the murder of Corentyne domestic worker, Leelawattie Mohamed who was gunned down in her Tain, home last month.

Moreover, the corporal was reportedly under the radar of several senior officers. Suspicions of his shady character rise after he was seen driving in and out of the TSU compound with various heavily tinted motorcar. The Police are continuing their investigations into the smuggling of the weapon and it is expected that several others will be implicated.

The subordinate officer was among five Police officers, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP), attached to the Tactical Services Unity (TSU) who were taken into custody last week after a civilian was caught attempting to leave the Police compound with an AK-47 rifle last week. The officers were placed under close arrest and after the 72 hours expired, they were put on open arrest.

While, the civilian remains in police custody as investigations continue. Investigators have since taken approached the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice. The Crime Chief further told this newspaper on Thursday that the DPP has returned the file, however, he did not know what advice was given since he was yet to review the file at the time.

Reports are a civilian vehicle was allowed into the compound last Tuesday evening without being searched. The vehicle reportedly stayed throughout the evening and when it was leaving the compound the following morning, the vehicle was searched and the weapon was discovered. After the discovery of the weapon, the mobile phone belonging to the driver was checked and proved that several calls were made to the ASP.

It was based on that information the senior police rank was questioned and placed under close arrest. The very ASP, this newspaper was told, has been fingered in several unprofessional and shady offences. In fact, he was interdicted from duty several years ago following the murder of Dweive Kant Ramdass in the Essequibo River. Ramdass was reportedly robbed of millions. The ASP, who was a cadet officer at the time and other ranks were accused of stealing the undisclosed sum of money, which they had confiscated. During the trial however, no evidence was given against the Police ranks they were reinstated into the Guyana Police Force.
