Cougars U20 upset senior team to book place in Candy Boss final
Cougars Under- 20 team created the first upset in the Candy Boss 8-a-side Football Tournament by beating Cougars senior team in their semi-final match-up on Wednesday night to book a place in the finals.
The game was touted as being a friendly encounter between the two sides, with the senior team using it as a warm up match. However, the U20 boys had different plans and in the fourth minute Quincy Mickle found the back of the net, sending the small crowd into a frenzy. However, two minutes later, Marlon Bissmolle secured an equaliser to keep the younger boys in check.
But in the 16th minute Gary Ennis made clear their intentions as he put the U20 back into the lead.
Shaquille Semple’s 26th minute goal brought panic in the senior’s camp as the score read 3-1.
However, Alex Fordyce scored just before the half time whistle to leave the score line 3-2 in the in favour of the under dogs.
One minute into the second half referee Colin Bowry, blew his whistle for an infringement and pointed to the penalty spot. The shot was taken by Tyrice Ogleton – bringing up the equaliser. However, two minutes later again referee Bowry again blew his whistle for an infringement and pointed to the penalty spot. However, this time it was against the senior team. Alistair Drakes made no mistake to put the U20 boys back into the lead; 4-3.
In desperation for yet another equaliser, the seniors found their goalkeeper playing way out of the 18-yard box, which gave John Reid an ample opportunity to make it 5-3.
The tournament was expected to continue on Thursday evening with Police FC meeting Monedderlust in their semi-final match up.
The winner will play Cougars U-20 in Saturday’s final. (G-4)
