Couple placed on station bail

Drug fraud

The pharmacist and his wife who were taken into police custody in connection with a massive drug fraud at the West Demerara Regional Hospital have been placed on bail as police investigations continue.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told media operatives on Monday that the matter is currently engaging the attention of the Fraud Squad. He disclosed that the couple were placed on bail, but are mandated to report to the police.
“They are required to report to the police from time to time, and are assisting with the investigation,” he explained.
Pharmacist Puran Bipath and his wife, both employees of the West Demerara Regional Hospital, have been suspected of involvement in a drug procurement and supply fraud after irregularities were discovered by a team from the Ministry of Public Health.
Police are continuing their investigations.
