In keeping with its commitment to the continuous promotion of healthy lifestyles, furniture giant Courts Guyana made a contribution of $500,000 to the Caricom Secretariat for the 12th annual Caricom 10K Road Race. The race is being held during this time to coincide with the sitting of the Caricom Heads of Government Meeting, which will be held in Guyana July 4-6, 2016.
The simple presentation was done today in the presence of the media at the company’s flagship store on Main Street. Courts Public Relations & Marketing Officer Roberta Ferguson, while addressing the media, said, “We are very happy to make this contribution to the Caricom Secretariat as Courts is no stranger towards 10K events in Guyana.”
Caricom Programme Manager for Crime and Security Sherwin Toyne-Stephenson, who is the Race Coordinator, was on hand to receive the cheque. He said: “The race itself began in 2005 as a commemorative event for the International Year of Sports and Physical Activity…the race seeks to bring together both professional and amateur athletes in an environment of cooperation and sharing to promote the good value of wellness as it promotes a peaceful and healthy society.”
Courts Managing Director Clyde De Hass said that the company was proud to support this initiative as it fit in its programme to promote and develop sports in Guyana. “In light of Courts being a regional organisation, it is only fitting to be partnering with Caricom to promote the sport.”
The race will begin at the Caricom Secretariat, Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown and head east along the Railway Embankment Road, then left along the Ogle Road. The race will then head west along the Rupert Craig Highway, left into JB Singh Road and right into Thomas Lands to finish in the National Park. There will also be a 5k race targeting mainly secondary school children and a 1500m race for primary students. Cash and prizes will be distributed after the event.
Caricom Secretary General Irwin LaRocque and Caricom Chairman, Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow are expected to be present at the event.
Cleveland Forde and Trinidadian Tonya Nero are both two-time defending champions for their respective category.
The race is scheduled to start at 06:00h on Sunday, July 3 under the theme “Promoting Peaceful and Healthy Societies”.
