COVID-19 death toll climbs to 69

…35 new cases recorded

Guyana has recorded another death from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), raising the total fatalities to 69.
This was announced by the Health Ministry on Tuesday, which stated that the latest deaths are a 74-year-old woman from Region One (Barima-Waini), who died at about 13:00h while receiving treatment at a medical facility and a 25-year-old male from Region 4 (Demerara/Mahaica)who died while receiving care at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The Ministry has since contacted relatives and those who would have had contact with her, to facilitate contact tracing.
On Monday, two deaths were also recorded. They were a 67-year-old man and a 57-year old woman from Region One.
Meanwhile, the latest statistics show that Guyana has 2437 cases after 35 samples returned positive. On the previous day, 133 new cases were reported. This gives a breakdown of 1267 males and 1170 females.
Some 16 patients are still seeking treatment in the designated Intensive Care Unit. There are 830 individuals on home isolation – a decline of 30; while numbers from institutional isolation have also declined by 61, standing at 102. Patients in institutional quarantine dropped from 60 to 35. From the confirmed cases, 1361 persons have recovered.
The Ministry’s regional breakdown showed that five new cases were detected in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 26 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), one in Five (Mahaica-Berbice), one in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and two in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
There were no increases in Regions One (Barima-Waini), Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) where figures remained at 348, 28, 277, 36 and 340 respectively.
President Irfaan Ali had announced that his Administration is in the process of securing US$60 million to fund various aspects of its response to the virus. According to the Head of State, the funds are being sourced from various international development partners including the World Bank, IDB and the Islamic Development Bank.
The Head of State noted that since taking office, his Government has brought together all the stakeholders to address the COVID-19 pandemic in a holistic manner. The President announced a range of measures to bring relief to families and businesses, noting that his Administration is focused on delivering an all-encompassing plan which would also take the health and safety of all citizens very seriously.
