COVID-19 Task Force cancels all GMR&SC events

The National COVID-19 Task Force on Sunday suspended all activities of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) until further notice.
This resulted from a breach in the COVID-19 protocols with the hosting of a well-attended Drag Race Championship at the South Dakota Circuit that evening.
Commenting on this, Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony said that the Task Force would be meeting with the GMR&SC on the way forward.
He explained, “A lot of times when the Task Force would agree to events, we normally would meet with the people who are hosting the events and we explain to them what are the conditions they must meet to host this event. Once they agree and they show us how they are going to put those measures in place, we would allow them to go ahead with the event.
“We do send out monitoring teams to all these events and in this case, we had monitoring teams that were on the ground, [they] took photo and videos and everything else and the Task Force would then make that decision to suspend them from having any activities until we can have a discussion and decide on the way forward.”
The decision of the Task Force to grant the GMR&SC permission for its race on Sunday came in for much criticism as hundreds of persons gathered at the South Dakota Circuit.
