CPL 2022: Warriors’ batting implodes as TKR register important win
The Trinbago Knight Riders defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors by 26 runs in match 18 of the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League at Queen’s Park Oval. Warriors batting suffered a meltdown, scoring 123 all out in 17.5 overs, chasing TKR’s 151.
In the chase, Warriors lost three wickets in an action-packed power play. Paul Stirling, who replaced Shai Hope who was injured during the warm-up was out for a duck, while Chandrapaul Hemraj made a stroke-filled 28 from 15 balls. Heinrich Klaasen came and slammed Akeal Hosein for three sixes but he departed to the same bowler for 19, as Warriors post 54-3 in the power play, their highest score in that phase this season.
After that things went downhill for Warriors as Hosein and Narine led the bowling effort with five wickets combined, as well as Andre Russell who claimed 3-16. Hosein had 3-36 while Narine was at his economical best with 2-9 in four overs. Hetmyer had made 20 from 16 balls, but the overall batting was ordinary.
Earlier Warriors won the toss and opted to bowl first. Due to match-ups with TKR stacked with left-handers, Warriors handed Junior Sinclair a debut while Gudakesh Motie missed out. TKR lost two wickets in the eventful power play.
Shepherd trapped Tiom Webster first ball of the game for a golden duck and he removed Nicholas Pooran at 31-2 after three overs. Pooran had slammed two fours and one six while open wing the batting but his promising stay was brief.
The Kiwi pair of Colin Munro and Tim Seifert joined forces and took TKR to 71-2 after ten overs. Munro, who looked dangerous, was caught by a diving Paul Stirling at deep square-leg off the bowling of Tabriz Shamsi. He made 42 from 37 balls an innings decorated with five fours. Munro and Seifert added 51 runs together.
At 82-3, Andre Russell made an entrance but it was a short stay at the crease as he was sent back by Tahir for three at 85-4 in 12.2 overs. Seifert struggled for his 27 from 35 balls an innings with one four while Narine struck 26 from 20 in the end. Captain Kieron Pollard came late in the innings and took Shamsi for two sixes but the spinner had the final day cleaning up the big man for 16.
TKR eventually reached 150-8 in 20 overs with Shamsi ending with 4-36 from four overs and Shepherd ending with 3-22 in three overs. The CPL continues today with Royals taking Tallawahs from 10:00h in Trinidad.
