All contingencies have been put in place for the grand one-day horse racing meet to be staged on Emancipation Day – August 1st, 2019 – at the Port Mourant Turf Club (PMTC)
Two days remain before this highly anticipated equestrian showdown, promoted by the 4-Horse Man Promotions Group in collaboration with the Crawford Memorial Turf Club & Sports Facility (CMTC&SF), gets underway.
Seven races are carded to be run, with the feature event being the 1300-metre race for three-year-old Guyana-bred horses, which has a winning purse of $300,000 and trophy.
More than 40 of Guyana’s top horses have thus far registered to participate in this meet. Among them are Red Rocket, Not This Time, Catch A Glimpse, Sweet Return, Gold Again, First Prince, Red Jet, Orion, The Republican and Princess Emma.
In an interview with Guyana Times Sport, Marcel Crawford Jnr, President of the Crawford Memorial Turf Club, said: “I expect a good turnout for the event. I am really happy; as, while it is the 100th anniversary of the Port Mourant Turf Club, it is also something that will showcase the lifetime work of my father, the late Marcel Crawford.
“During the 1980s-1990s, he was (among the few) persons who single-handedly held horse racing together.
“The Port Mourant Turf Club is the best place to host the event, because it can hold a large amount of individuals, as we do expect a large turnout on August 1.
“I expect everything to run smoothly and with order, as we will not tolerate any disorderly conduct.”
Among the highly anticipated events of the day are: the race for horses classified H3 and Lower, to be run over a distance of 1000 metres for a first prize of $220,000 and a trophy. The 900-metre race for two-year-old Guyana-bred horses, which carries a winning prize of $220,000 and a trophy.
