Crawford, Greene lead cycling points’ qualification
– Niles, Gopilal other top riders
The lads from Berbice, Romello Crawford and Andre ‘Padlock’ Greene, are reigning supreme at the Guyana Cycling News (GCN) points’ classification that was last updated on Friday June 7, 2019.
Crawford, the Flying Ace rider who was successful during his overseas stints, leads the table with 99 points, while Greene, of Team United, has 90 points.
Linden’s Michael Anthony, who has been brilliant of late, is in third position with 79 points, while Team Evolution’s Paul De Nobrega has 76 points and is in fourth position. Briton John of Team United completes the top five riders, with 70 points.
Christopher Griffith of Team Evolution, who often plays a supporting role to team mate De Nobrega, sits in sixth position with 60 points; while Curtis Dey (59), Geron Williams (46), Andrew Hicks (43) and Balram Narine (22) complete the top 10 riders.
In the veteran/masters under- 45 categories, Junior Niles sits pretty with 52 points, while Paul Choo-Wee-Nam is in second with 32 points. Jaikarran Sukhai has 20 points, while Alex Mendes (16) and Warren McKay (15) complete the top five veterans.
Promising Junior cyclist Ajay Gopilall from Berbice leads the points table in his junior class with 33 points, while Sherwin Sampson has 29 points. Ralph Seenarine (26), Jonathan Ramsuchit (18) and Jeremiah Joseph (16) are the top junior cyclists.
Most of these cyclists will “take their wheels” to Sunday’s road race in Linden, where they will be aiming to extend their points in the GCN classification.
The next big cycling event is set for Sunday June 9, and the winner of the three-lap seniors’ race would be taking away $52,000 as the prize. Second position winner would be rewarded with $37,000; third-placer $27,000; fourth placer $17,000; fifth placer $12,000; and sixth position will receive $10,000.
Veterans Under-45 (35-44) race, a two-lap affair, will see the winner taking home $15,000, while second position rider will be awarded $12,000 and third placed cyclist will receive $6,000.
The Juniors’ race, a three- lap affair, will reward the winner with $16,000, while winner of the Ladies’ race will take home $12,000 and winner of the Juveniles race will receive $10,000. This racing meet, slated to be held in Linden, is sponsored by the Rose Family and Clear Waters.
