Cycling will continue in the ‘ancient county’ on Sunday May 2 with the Marcel Crawford Memorial 45-mile race.
The race will pedal off from the Sukphaul Gas Station in New Amsterdam at 8:30h and proceed to Number 51 Police Station, before returning for the finish at Alness Village at the late Marcel Crawford’s residence.
This race is open to Berbice cyclists only, and is the first memorial race for the former national champion Marcel Crawford. Eight sprint prizes will be awarded, while the first five finishers in the open category, the first three juniors and the top veteran will be rewarded.
The race is sponsored by Franco Crawford, a former national cyclist who is based in London, and Colin Elcock Crawford. This race has been approved by the COVID-19 Task Force, and all those in attendance are asked to wear a mask.
The race is the second event of the 2021 season in Berbice. On Easter Sunday, Romello Crawford took the top spot in that encounter that started at Sukphaul Gas Station in New Amsterdam and ended in Corriverton. This race will see the likes of Andrew Hicks and the return of Balram Narine and Andre ‘Padlock’ Green, among other top Berbice cyclists.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has disclosed three dates in late May for the hosting of the National Cycling Championship. However, hosting of the three-legged race is dependent on approval from the National COVID-19 Task Force.
According to the release on the GCF Facebook page, the proposed dates are May 22, 23 and 30, with the format being Time Trial, Senior Road Race and Junior/Female/Veteran Road Race. These races hosted in Berbice would be used to prepare the men from the ancient county for those events. Another cycle race is set to be run off from Georgetown to Mahaicony on May 5, Indian Arrival Day.
