…for GECOM’s chair
To choose a new Dalai Lama for Tibetian Buddhists, Grand Lamas scour the land interviewing young boys to discern who might be the last Dalai Lama’s reincarnation. Now you know this can’t be easy…and it takes years. But at least they have some criteria – including which direction the smoke blew when the last Dalai Lama was cremated! You won’t be surprised, dear reader, to discover the process takes years.
Well, it’d appear we’re in a similar process of reading smoke signals to select the next chair of GECOM. After the PNC’d gamed the electoral system for two decades by having a Judge as the Elections Chair, President Carter, as the referee, had brokered a deal between the PPP and PNC to add “or any other fit and proper person” to being a Judge to select the Chair. Everything was hunky dory for another two decades until now.
Prezzie, who though “sober as a judge” but NOT a judge, had been nominated once by the PNC’s Hoyte, suddenly decided he only wanted judges to be proposed by the Opposition. Some unkindly persons suggested he wanted to return to the days when the PNC routinely rigged election with a Judge guarding the “sanctity of ballots”. But your Eyewitness didn’t think Prezzie would do that, would he?
Anyhow, after a painful period of the lawyers on both sides hurling explications and hermeneutical exegeses of esoteric words like “or”, “other” and “fit” (“persons” seemed to be uncontested!) Prezzie decided to issue the criteria for the GECOM Chair. Some naïve (or battle weary) souls breathed a sigh of relief – but not your (jaded) Eyewitness. And he’s now vindicated.
Since the person proffered by the Opposition must be “not unacceptable to the President”, Prezzie appeared reasonable to at least signal “where he was coming from”. But he stated, “The individual must not be an activist of any form (gender, racial, religious, etc); that the person must have no political affiliation; and that the person should have the general characteristics of honesty, integrity, faithfulness, and diligence.”
Whew!! And here your Eyewitness though finding a Dalai Lama was tough!! “No activist of any stripe need apply!” Would a person like Prezzie who’s taken a firm stance for Reparations, justice for African Guyanese and their culture, etc, be rejected as an “African activist”? “NO political affiliation”? Does such a political unicorn exist in divided Guyana? Forget “honesty, integrity, and diligence”…how the heck does one ensure “faithfulness”??
But what the heck. Didn’t Caesar divorce his wife – not because she was unfaithful – but that even an accusation could be made against her?
In Guyana, GECOM’s Chair must be purer than Caesar’s wife.
…for firing Town Clerk
What’s going on here? Bulkan can beat up on Linden Town Clerk Jonellor Bowen by revoking her appointment – but not Royston King? Between Bowen and King, who’s been more “disruptive” and “disrespectful”? King was not only dissed the other City Councillors and the Deputy Mayor, but even Bulkan on several occasions. Not to mention the Cabinet on the request to suspend the Parking Meter Contract. All Bowen did was to object to the high-handed attitude of the Linden Mayor…something others have also pointed out.
So, we wonder if it’s because Bowen is female? When a male like King makes his point forcefully, he’s showing “leadership” qualities. But when a female does the same, she’s being “disrespectful” and even “hysterical”! But it’s also clear Bowen doesn’t have the godfathers in the PNC like King does when even Bulkan can’t touch him.
But Bulkan has revealed why he and the Cabinet have refused to comply with the law and launch the Local Government Commission.
They can “do what dey want wid” Local Government!!
