Race walking in Guyana has begun to attract international attention and the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club, which is noted for the promotion of the sport in the country, has teamed up with the Verman Bedessee Foundation based in USA to further promote and develop the sport across the country. This is being done with the goal of Guyana winning an Olympic medal in race walking.
According to the Coordinator of the club, Jennifer Major, race walking is gaining popularity with all ages and in all 10 administrative regions as a competitive and leisure pursuit. The club is happy with the attention and involvement of the Verman Bedessee Foundation and noted this programme will help to push the sport to international standards.
Given the current situation where social distancing must be practised, Major believes that it is a great time to get involved in race walking, for it is great for people of all ages and fitness levels. Verman Bedessee Foundation President Verman Bedessee said he was committed to the development of race walking and other sports in Guyana and planned to assist in arranging international race-walking events in the country. He is also hopeful of promoting training sessions and providing financial assistance for its development.
Race walking is an event contested at all levels, from youth athletes on to the Olympic Games.
