Cuban National Jose Perez Mona was on Friday sentenced to one year’s imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody, by means of the hospital window while at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), on September 25, 2018.
Mona, through an interpreter, admitted to the charge when he stood before Magistrate Leron Daly in that Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
According to facts presented in court by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh, on the day in question, the Police had arrested Mona on a charge of break and enter and larceny, and he was taken to the hospital after he complained of feeling unwell.
However, while under guard, he requested to use the washroom. After he was escorted to the washroom, he locked himself therein and attempted to jump through the window, which was open.
He was later re-arrested and placed in custody.
