Cuban worker electrocuted, 2 injured at Houston construction site 

A Cuban national, working in Guyana, was electrocuted to death on Tuesday morning, while two others were injured after they came into contact with an electricity power line at a new development in Houston, near Caneview Avenue.
Dead is 36-year-old Yardon (only name given), a Cuban national.
One of the injured men, 29-year-old Troy Estriado, also known as “Labba”, of Kuru Kuru, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, remains in a critical condition, while another injured man is also said to be in a critical condition.
Based on reports received, the men were working on a scaffold when it reportedly tilted and came into contact with overhead power lines.
The Cuban national was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured men were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL), in a release, stated that it is aware of the tragic accident that occurred in the New Houston area, where scaffolding reportedly rolled away from a building and came into contact with one of its 13.8 kV primary distribution lines.
“GPL extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time. GPL also expresses sympathy to those injured and hopes for their full and speedy recovery,” the release from GPL added.
GPL reminded contractors, workers and members of the public to exercise extreme caution when operating near the company’s electrical lines, poles and other network infrastructure.

Meanwhile, a representative of the building, Andrew King, which is 90 per cent completed, recalled the initial circumstances surrounding the accident, saying that he received a phone call during the morning hours from the contractor, who reported that a serious accident had occurred.
“We were in the process of expanding the business when this tragic accident occurred. I got a phone call from the contractor, whom I had just left at the job site, and he said that they had had a really bad accident. It sounded like everyone died, but it turned out not to be so.”
The supervisor was Guyanese and was injured, while the other workers were Spanish speakers.
Meanwhile, in terms of safety measures, King claimed that the site upholds all safety protocols.
Only in July, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), in collaboration with the Labour Ministry, launched a four-day project and workshop initiative aimed at modernising and strengthening Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) systems across Guyana.
