Just weeks after pleading guilty to a simple larceny charge, 27-year-old Jason Thomas of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was on Friday sentenced to serve 2 years in prison for the offence.
Thomas, also known as “Curl up”, was handed the sentence by Magistrate Dylon Bess after a probation report was presented. According to the report, the father of two was previously charged for possession of narcotics and is currently unemployed.
The charge against the father of two read that on June 22, 2019, at Regent and Wellington Streets, Georgetown, he stole a $120,000 gold band from Clairan Rambarran.
On his first court appearance, Thomas admitted to the charge and explained to the court that he committed the act since he was frustrated and needed money to purchase milk for his two young children.
Nevertheless, Magistrate Bess in handing down his sentence considered the fact that Thomas pleaded guilty and did not waste the court’s time, along with the information revealed from the probation report.
As such, an unrepresented Thomas will now spend the next two years behind bars for the offence.
