A customer is suspected of being part of a gang that robbed more than 20 persons at a Corentyne, Berbice bar on Sunday evening. The customer was arrested on Tuesday after being identified on surveillance footage as having connections with robbers.
The incident occurred about 19:30h when there were close to two dozen customers at Mikes Beer Haven, called Murphy’s Bar, at Number 65 Village.
Surveillance footage has since been reviewed by Police and showed five masked and heavily armed men entering the entity from a side entrance.
According to proprietor Krishdendatt Hemnauth, the men entered the bar and ordered everyone to lie face down on the floor.
He explained that the gate was closed, but the padlock was not locked. He added that when the men entered the bar, one of them ran to him and punched him in the face.
“He cuff me straight to my face and I fall down and when I get up back, he give me another cuff and I fall down again and I still get up and he cuff me again and when I fall down, I didn’t get up, because was sheer blood and I couldn’t know what happening then.”
Hemnauth said the men then proceeded to rob the customers who were in the bar at the time, of their cash and other valuables, which included cellular phones.
He said they also took about $135,000 which belonged to him.
When the men entered and made their demands, one of the customers who had been in the bar for more than two hours was not robbed which was reported to the Police.
After viewing the footage, the Police identified the ‘customer’ as someone who was involved in criminal activities.
He was arrested and taken to the Number 51 Police Station as investigations continue.
Reports are that the suspect lives at Philippe Village, also on the Corentyne.
