Cuyuni River killing: Miner charged with murder charge

A 25-year-old gold miner of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) has been charged in connection with the murder of a man at Aranguy Landing, Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni). Colin Anderson, also known as “Strongy” or “Biggs,” was on Monday charged with murder Contrary to Common Law in relation to the death of Michael John Benn, also called “Mikey.” The incident occurred on December 21. Anderson appeared on Monday, before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court. The charge was read to him and in keeping with procedure for indictable offences, he was not required to enter a plea. The court ordered that Anderson be remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to February 12, 2026. Reports are that the 42-year-old gold miner from Charity, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed to death during an altercation at Arangoy Landing, Cuyuni River. Police in a release had said that on the day of the incident, Benn was at a liquor shop in the area when he became involved in an altercation with two males, during which he was stabbed in the chest. His body was later taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital. Anderson was taken into custody while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the other suspect.
