Milo Schools U-18 Football Tournament 2020…

Defending champions of the 2019 Milo Schools Under-18 Football Tournament, Christianburg-Wismar Secondary, together with 2019 runners-up Lodge Secondary and Cummings Lodge Secondary, were in the winners’ circle when play in the eighth edition of this Milo Schools Football Tournament continued on Sunday at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground on Carifesta Avenue.
In the day’s scheduled first game, the Bishops’ High School fought valiantly but went down to Cummings Lodge.
A hat-trick from Ronnel George, who pierced the net in the 5th, 20th and 25th minutes, facilitated Cummings Lodge executing a shock attack on the BHS defense and goalkeeper, thereby ensuring they were in control at all intervals of the game.
Lindley Bacchus added another goal in the 34th minute to see Cummings Lodge register four goals in the first half.
The second segment of play belonged to the Bishops’ boys, whose Linford Isles scored in the 54th minute and Antoine Herod scored in the 60th minute. However, with two goals to their credit whilst Cummings Lodge had four to theirs, the Bishops’ efforts were too little too late, and they lost the game 4-2.
In the game following, defending champions Christianburg-Wismar Secondary edged past Golden Grove 2-1.
Under new management, this Linden XI barely held on in a game that could have gone either way, and somehow managed to produce the winning goal in the final minutes of the encounter.
Jermain Maison scored first for the Linden team in the 16th minute, but Calvin Richmond responded for Golden Grove in the 46th minute to tie up the game at 1-1. But with just five minutes of play remaining, Randy Pickering was able to produce the deciding goal for CWSS.
Even without their captain and forward star Dorwin George, who is on international duties in the Men’s U20 National Team, Lodge Secondary were able to walk away with a victory, albeit slim, over Ann’s Grove in the final game.
Shemroy Mayers was the lone marksman for Lodge, with goals in the 4th and 53rd minutes; while the lone goal for Ann’s Grove came from Mark Roberts in the 37th minute.
The Milo tournament will continue this weekend with another six games being played. On Saturday, February 22, Charlestown Secondary will come up against New Central High School at 12:00hrs; St. John’s College will lock horns with Uitvlugt Secondary at 13:45hrs, and Annandale Secondary will battle their Christ Church counterparts at 15:30hrs.
There will be no games in this competition on Sunday because of the Republic Day festivities, but action will resume on Monday, February 24th, when Friendship Secondary will take on Carmel Secondary at 12:00hrs while Canje Secondary will go toe-to-toe with South Ruimveldt at 13:45hrs. In the final game of the day, Vergenoegen will be seeking the advantage when they meet Tucville Secondary at 15:30hrs.
