Cyclist dies after collision with motorcycle on Republic Road, NA

Police are investigating a fatal road accident that occurred Saturday, January 10, 2026, at about 13:40h on Republic Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice, in the vicinity of Cheddi Jagan Street. Dead is Akeem Agard, 38, formerly of 39 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The accident involved motorcycle CL 5071, owned by Clifford Junior Welcome, a 29-year-old of Fort Ordinance, East Canje, Berbice, and ridden by Kenneth Clarkston, 21, also of Fort Ordinance, and Agard, a pedal cyclist. According to the Police, initial investigations revealed that both the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a safety helmet, and the pedal cyclist were travelling south along the eastern driving lane of the roadway, with the motorcyclist behind the cyclist. While in motion, the cyclist reportedly made a left turn west at the same time the motorcyclist attempted to overtake, resulting in a collision on the western driving lane. As a result of the impact, both men were thrown onto the road surface and sustained injuries to their bodies.
Agard was picked up in an unconscious condition by emergency medical technicians (EMT) and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The motorcyclist was taken to the same hospital by members of the Guyana Police Force in a Police vehicle, where he remains hospitalised in a conscious condition.
Police said the rider was not breathalysed at the time due to his medical condition.
Investigations into the accident are continuing.
