A cyclist was on Monday struck down and killed by a speeding minibus at Houston, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Dead is pedal cyclist Rudy Nurse, of Lot 188 Lance Gibbs Street, Queenstown.
Reports are the accident occurred at about 15:45h in the vicinity of Rahaman’s Park, East Bank Demerara.
According to Police, the 32-year-old man was struck by minibus, BYY 1311, driven by a 25-year-old resident of Diamond, East Bank Demerara. Police enquiries disclosed that the pedal cyclist was proceeding south (northbound traffic only) on the extreme western side of Houston Public Road while the bus was proceeding north on the eastern drive lane of the same road when the accident occurred.
“As the driver of the bus was in the vicinity of Rahaman’s Park, the pedal cyclist reportedly proceeded to cross from the western side of the road to eastern side and in the process of doing so he ended up into the path of the vehicle where the front left side came into contact with the pedal cyclist,” the police said in a statement. According to the police, as a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist fell onto the roadway.
When Guyana Times arrived on the scene, the body was covered as police and the minibus driver awaited the ambulance. Nurse was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead. The driver, who passed a breathalyser test, is in custody assisting with the investigation.
